A History of Traditional Use
Andrographis paniculata is commonly used in China, India and various Southeast Asian countries. Both the fresh and dried leaves, as well as the fresh juice of the whole plant have been used in a variety of traditions. Andrographis is known as Chuan Xin Lian in traditional Chinese herbalism, where it is believed to affect the digestive, cardiovascular and urinary systems. It is commonly used as a wintertime herb. Andrographis in cut form may be used as a tea or mixed into a formula.
Andrographis (also known as “king of bitters") is one of the most bitter herbs on the market. Andrographis is a member of the plant family Acanthaceae. The active phytochemicals are found in the leaves of the plant. The most medicinally active phytochemicals are andrographolide, deoxyandrographolide and neoandrographolide. In Sweden, andrographis has been used for more than ten years as a primary herb for the winter season. It is extremely bitter.
