Hu Zhang, beneficial and restorative properties
Japanese Knotweed has high concentrations of resveratrol, a potent antioxidant which is also present in lesser quantities in grapes and mulberries. Japanese Knotweed is high in oxalic acid. Hu Zhang is a good source of vitamins A and C and contains potassium, manganese, zinc, and phosphorus. Resveratrol can also have a positive impact on cardiovascular health, lowering cholesterol, and balancing blood pressure. Resveratrol is part of a compound group called polyphenols, which protect the body and brain from any damage that could lead to tragic cognitive ailments. The resveratrol content in Japanese Knotweed acts an energizer to your brain pathways, keeping them active and healthy while antioxidants eliminate any free radicals.

Japanese knotweed rhizomes contain emodin (a natural occurring anthraquinone derivative) which helps regulate bowel movement and relieves obstinate constipation by acting as an natural laxative. The resveratrol found in Japanese Knotweed reduces gastrointestinal distress and also acts as a very mild laxative, which can help clear your system and get your digestive process back on track. The roots also aid in promoting the vessels to function properly which ultimately leads to good health. Hu Zhang is beneficial for swollen joints.

Hu Zhang servers as an immune booster and increases the ability of the immune system to fight against infections.

Hu Zhang clears heat-toxins and can be used both internally and externally for this purpose. Japanese knotweed has been shown to help in preventing pro-inflammatory pathways and aid in controlling diseases related to inflammation due to its bioactive constituents. Thus, concluded that the bioactive constituents of the herb consists of anti-inflammatory agents that helps to combat free radicals. Hu Zhang clears damp heat from the liver and gallbladder channels. Hu Zhang activates blood circulation to relieve pain with blood stagnation at its core.

Naturally Occurring Components of Hu Zhang: Though resveratrol is the best-known of the Hu Zhang components, it is important to know the others like:

  • NuHerb Japanese Knotweed

I have taken ground J. Knotweed Rhizome powder on and off since 2016 when I I became infected with a persistent Tick-Borne illness that didn't respond to the typical CDC Rx. J. Knotweed has been a staple to mitigate my neurological symptoms. When at my worst, I would take it daily in large quantities, sometimes up to 9-12 tsp/day. I have purchased both NuHerb and Plum-Flower, both are similar, although Plum-flower typically has the finer grind in my experience. The most recent batch from NuHerb that I purchased in Q2 of 2022 has a more orange color than is typical of the herb when mixed with water, but tastes just the same. I'm not sure what this means, simply an observation.
