Couch grass ‘Elymus reopens is a very common perennial species of grass native to Europe, Asia, Arctic and northwest Africa and it has
often been considered a weed.

The dried grass when broken up is used as Incense. This incense was used in medieval northern Europe when other resin-based types of
incense were unavailable.    Couch grass is a weed that is widely distributed throughout the northern hemisphere. It is a tall grass with spikes up to 15cm long.

In traditional Austrian medicine it has been known to be made into a tea and used to help against fever. It was also used by some people to
help with skin conditions, kidney disorders and as a dietary component for diabetic patients. However, this has not been proved there is a
lack of clinical studies to support those uses.

The folk medicine of couch grass has been used for hundreds of years mostly in Romania, Hungary, Yugoslavian and Albania In these countries
is was used to create a healthy bladder, chronic skin disorders. The tea has been used to alleviate bronchial irritation. Tea from the root
seems to be helpful in treating urinary infections and that is because of the herb’ s broad antibiotic and diuretic properties. One of the
chemical constituents, agropyrone has been shown to have strong antibiotic properties. The herb also contains mucilage that seems to
help clear congestion while it coats the throat.

This herb is mostly taken as a tea but sometimes it is found in capsule and extract form.

In western countries despite these indications from fold lore pharmacological and clinical studies are lacking.  In other words
research reveals no clinical date regarding the use of couch grass.  There is no known side effect or drug interactions associated with the
use of couch grass.
