Rooibos Tea Health Benefits & Information
Rooibos tea is an herbal tea and does not contain caffeine or tannins like green, white, black and oolong teas contain. The tea is made from the needle-like leaves of the aspalathus linearis bush that is grown on the western coast of South Africa. After harvest the leaves are fermented (oxidized) changing their color to a dark reddish-brown. This process creates a flavorful smooth drinking tea that is dark orangish-red to deep red in color. The tea is slightly sweet with a nutty flavor. The long the tea steeps the flavor becomes bolder, going from light sweet floral and vanilla notes to rich full-bodied woody and earthy notes.
Rooibos tea is an excellent source of polyphenols and antioxidants to benefit a variety of health concerns. Rooibos is also oxalic acid free, a compound that has been found to promote kidney stones.
