About White Willow Bark
The bark of the stately white willow tree (Salix alba) has been used in China for centuries as a medicine because of its ability to relieve pain and to lower fevers. Early settlers in America found Native Americans gathering bark from indigenous willow trees for similar purposes.

White willow bark contains a naturally occurring chemical from which aspirin is derived (salicin). Salicin makes white willow bark the natural substitute for aspirin with all of the same benefits of the pharmaceutical drug without the harmful side effects.   The salicylic acid in white willow bark reduces the body’s levels of prostaglandins, hormone-like compounds which are the basis for aches, pain, and inflammation. Research also shows that low levels of salicylates in the blood actually increase uric acid concentrations, whereas high levels of salicylates in the blood lower the uric acid level.

Scientific Studies on White Willow Bark
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, numerous studies have been conducted on white willow bark proving its effectiveness in remedying a variety of ailments. Studies suggest that willow bark may be useful for the following conditions: headaches, lower back pain, and osteoarthritis. Some herbalists also recommend white willow bark for menstrual cramps, fever, flu, tendinitis, and bursitis although no scientific studies have been proven for these conditions.
