What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection primarily transmitted to humans through the bite of infected black-legged ticks, also known as deer ticks. The disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Typical symptoms include fever, headache, fatigue, and a characteristic skin rash called erythema migraines. If left untreated, Lyme disease can spread to joints, the heart, and the nervous system, leading to more severe symptoms such as arthritis and neurological complications. Diagnosis is often based on symptoms and the possibility of exposure to infected ticks. Early detection is crucial to prevent long-term complications. Prevention strategies include avoiding areas where ticks are prevalent, wearing protective clothing, using insect repellents, and promptly removing ticks if found attached to the skin. Lyme disease is most common in parts of North America, Europe, and Asia where the ticks that carry it are found.
