Customize Your Own Floral and Herbal Waters

                                      DIY Herbal and Floral Waters

Pamper yourself with your own herbal or floral blend waters. They are an easy and fun way to relax or energize. Using herbs topically can cause problems. Before you use any herbal water do a spot check on a small patch of skin. Also be aware topical use of herbs may also interfere with some medications, use with caution. Wait a few days, if a rash appears you may be allergic.

Some ways floral and herbal waters can be used include:

  • Facial Toners
  • Hair Rinse
  • Body Spray
  • Add to unscented creams and body lotions
  • Ingredient for facial masks
  • Place some in an open container by your bed or chair; you will be able to enjoy the aroma.

Materials

  • Fresh or Dried Herbs and Flowers
  • Clean glass jar with a lid (never use a metal container)
  • Vodka, Rum or Chlorine free bottled water
  • Cheesecloth, coffee filter or plastic strainer (never use metal utensils)
  • Essential Oils (method #2)
  • Witch Hazel (method #2)
  • Glass storage jar or spritzer bottle

Method #1

  • Fill a glass jar loosely with herbs of your choice.
  • Fill the jar to the top with the vodka, rum or cooled boiled chlorine free water.
  • Cover tightly with the lid and store in a cool dark spot.
  • Shake the jar daily for 1 – 6 weeks
  • Strain the liquid out of the jar into a clean storage spritzer bottle or glass jar, discard wet herbs and flowers
  • Store in refrigerator 1 – 2 weeks. Shake the bottle well before each use.

Method #2

  • Fill a glass jar or bowl with your desired herbs.
  • Pour boiling water over the herbs to cover, steep until cool.
  • Strain the liquid out of the jar or bowl into a clean storage spritzer bottle or glass jar, discard wet herbs and flowers
  • Add a few drops your desired essential oils and a dash of witch hazel.
  • Store in refrigerator 1 – 2 weeks. Shake the bottle well before each use.

Unsure of what herbs or flowers to use? Pick your favorite aromatic herb or flower and go with that. If you want something with more complexity try adding in different herbs. Don’t be afraid to mix flowers and herbs you will find some delightful combinations! Below are a few suggestions:

  • Lavender – add basil, rose petals or jasmine
  • Lemon or Lime Peel - add peppermint, rosemary or bergamot
  • Vanilla Bean – add cloves, cinnamon or bay leaves

Here are some ideas for herbs to mix and match. Lavender, Dandelion Flowers, Eucalyptus leaf, Grated Ginger, Hops, Jasmine, Chamomile, Linden Flowers, Meadowsweet, Mint, Citrus Peel, Orange blossoms, Rose hips or petals, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary, Thyme, Bay Leaves, Cloves, Cinnamon, Melissa, Geranium, bergamot, Elder flowers, Lemon verbena, Nettle leaf, Oregano, Yarrow, Coneflower, Lemon balm, Frankincense, Fennel seed, Goldenrod, Cardamon pods, cucumber peel, etc.
