Interesting Fact About Huai Hua

Huai Hua gets its English name "Scholar Tree Flower Buds" from the practice of scholars and students in ancient China using the bright yellow dye
extracted from the flower buds as ink for writing and calligraphy.

The vibrant yellow pigment compound found in Huai Hua is called rutin or rutoside. In addition to being used as a natural dye,
rutin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that contribute to Huai Hua's medicinal effects.

However, extracting the dye from fresh Huai Hua buds was a tedious process requiring pounds of buds to
make just an ounce of ink. Despite this, the distinct yellow hue became prized by scholars and calligraphers.

Writings and artwork using the Huai Hua-derived "scholar's ink" can still be found preserved from as early as the Tang Dynasty over
1,200 years ago. The superior light-fastness of the dye allowed these works to retain their original vivid colors over centuries.

So while modern uses focus on Huai Hua's therapeutic applications, the herb had an important role in ancient
Chinese art and writing as one of the only sources for a brilliant, long-lasting yellow pigment. Its use as calligrapher's ink is part of its fascinating history.
