Solomon's Seal Therapeutic Properties
Solomon's Seal is known mostly for its action on tendons, joints, ligaments, and the musculoskeletal system. As a yin tonic, Solomon's Seal is a restorative, nourishing, moisturizing, and lubricating tonic herb. These actions can be seen especially in the throat, and mucosa lining of the lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and reproductive system of both men and women.
Solomon's seal tea has a positive effect for a dry cough, Solomon’s seal aids to soothe and remedy numerous types of cough, respiratory aliments, and lung congestion. Since it is also a demulcent, it coats the throat and helps relieve the irritation causing a cough.
Solomon’s seal consists of allantoin which is an anti-inflammatory agent.
Solomon’s seal reinforces in regulating and maintaining blood pressure. Solomon's seal contains convallarin which supports cardiovascular health. Convallarin is a cardio glycoside.
Solomon’s seal has a mild, slightly sweet, nutty taste.
Roots are rich in starch, this can be extracted by beating or grinding the dried root, the starch can then be used to make bread or can be mixed in other foods such as soups.
Native Americans consumed the starch-rich rhizomes of smooth Solomon’s seal as a potato-like food used to make breads and soups.
Solomon's seal is traditionally prepared as both a tincture and tea; both hot and cold infusion may be indicated. To experience the full benefit of its demulcent properties, the Solomon Seal should be made into a cold infusion. A cold infusion is prepared by steeping the herbs in tepid water for 7 to 10 hours.
Solomon seal tea
- Place 1/2 teaspoon of chopped/ground root in an empty cup
- Boil tea water, wait a minute or two before pouring it into your cup
- Cover and steep for 7-10 minutes
