What Is Hu Zhang?

Hu Zhang (虎杖) is the Pin Yin name commonly used for Japanese Knotweed in Chinese herbalism. It has a long history of traditional use in China and has also attracted modern scientific interest because of its naturally occurring plant compounds.

Among the constituents identified in Polygonum cuspidatum are:

  • Resveratrol
  • Polydatin
  • Emodin
  • Physcion
  • Chrysophanol

Important: Naturally containing resveratrol does not make whole Japanese Knotweed powder the same as a standardized resveratrol extract. This product is not represented as providing a standardized amount of resveratrol.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Use

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Hu Zhang has historically been described using traditional concepts such as clearing Heat, resolving Dampness, invigorating Blood, dispelling stasis and transforming phlegm.

These terms belong to the traditional Chinese herbal system. They describe historical patterns of use and are not modern medical diagnoses or claims that this product treats disease.

Japanese Knotweed and Stephen Buhner's Herbal Protocol

Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) is one of the herbs discussed by herbalist and author Stephen Harrod Buhner in his book Healing Lyme and is commonly associated with what has become known as the Buhner Protocol.

When comparing Japanese Knotweed products, pay attention to the botanical name, plant part and form. This Nuherbs product provides fine-ground Polygonum cuspidatum rhizome.

If you are following Buhner's work, refer directly to Healing Lyme for his discussion of herbal combinations, preparation methods and suggested use.

How Is Hu Zhang Powder Used?

This finely ground form is convenient when a preparation calls for powdered Hu Zhang and eliminates the need to grind cut herb yourself.

If you prefer recognizable pieces of the herb for traditional decoction-style preparation, consider our cut Hu Zhang instead.

Herbal preparation and amount can vary. Follow the directions for the preparation you are making or the guidance of an appropriate healthcare professional or qualified herbal practitioner.

Nuherbs Quality Testing

Herbal quality involves more than color and appearance. Nuherbs reports using both in-house laboratory testing and independent third-party laboratory testing as part of its quality-control program.

Testing information provided for Nuherbs herbs includes:

  • Microbial testing
  • Pesticide screening
  • Heavy-metal testing, including lead, mercury and arsenic

These are characteristics that cannot be reliably determined simply by looking at an herb.

Why Buy Hu Zhang From 1st Chinese Herbs?

We've specialized in Chinese and Western herbs since 1994. We believe customers should be able to understand what they're purchasing—not simply be told that an herb is “high quality.”

That's why we provide details such as botanical identity, plant part, form, origin and ingredient information whenever available. If you have a question about this Hu Zhang before ordering, ask us.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Hu Zhang the same as Japanese Knotweed?

Hu Zhang is the Pin Yin name commonly used for Japanese Knotweed in Chinese herbalism. This product is Polygonum cuspidatum.

Is this Japanese Knotweed an extract?

No. This is fine-ground whole botanical material, not a concentrated extract.

Does Japanese Knotweed naturally contain resveratrol?

Yes. Resveratrol is one of several naturally occurring constituents identified in Polygonum cuspidatum. This product is not represented as a standardized resveratrol extract.

Should I buy powder or cut Hu Zhang?

Choose powder when you want finely ground whole herb. Cut Hu Zhang is often preferred when recognizable pieces of the herb are desired for traditional decoction-style preparation.

I have taken ground J. Knotweed Rhizome powder on and off since 2016 when I I became infected with a persistent Tick-Borne illness that didn't respond to the typical CDC Rx. J. Knotweed has been a staple to mitigate my neurological symptoms. When at my worst, I would take it daily in large quantities, sometimes up to 9-12 tsp/day. I have purchased both NuHerb and Plum-Flower, both are similar, although Plum-flower typically has the finer grind in my experience. The most recent batch from NuHerb that I purchased in Q2 of 2022 has a more orange color than is typical of the herb when mixed with water, but tastes just the same. I'm not sure what this means, simply an observation.
