Prescription Drugs and Dangers

What if I told you that over 100 people die from drug overdoses in the United States every day (Source). Would you believe me? Furthermore, did you know that prescription drugs kill more people every year than all illicit street drugs combined? Modern medicine can produce some miracles but at the same time, there are many people who are prescribed drugs with harmful side effects and pay the ultimate price. In modern medicine, prescription drugs kill 100,000 people every year even when taken as directed (Source).

The study estimating that 100,000 Americans die each year from their prescriptions looked only at deaths from known side effects.

So, the study didn't include people who had abused drugs and overdosed but rather those who died simply because of the side effects of prescription drugs. Traditional Chinese medicines often have few, if any side effects and those side effects tend to be of a much milder inclination than prescription medications. Additionally, there are some who claim that prescription drugs are even more deadly than street drugs (Source).

More than 36,000 people die from drug overdoses annually and most of these deaths are caused by prescription drugs.

This information is also supported by the Centers for Disease Control

Overdose deaths involving opioid pain relievers (OPR), also known as opioid analgesics, have increased and now exceed deaths involving heroin and cocaine combined.

Alternative Health

In this age of prescription use and abuse, many people are turning to natural medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, and other alternative health options to try to avoid the dangers of prescription drugs. Always consult your naturopathic doctor, physician, or herbalist before starting a new herbal regimen. There are many factors that go into finding the right dosage for you, including weight, age, body physiology, tolerance levels, and more.

In general, you want to start with lower dosages and work up to your tolerance--the point at which the herb is helping to relieve your ailment. That being said, you may need to use more of the herb than you're used to using in modern medicine. Because herbs tend not to have the harmful side effects of prescription medicines, you typically will need to take more of herbs to get the desired effects.
