Back to School – The Germ Season Begins!

Posted by 1st Chinese Herbs on Aug 4th 2016

It’s that time of year again! School will be starting soon! The kids are excited to get new school supplies and clothes. They are excited to see their friends and start a new grade. As a parent the start of the school year means something different to me. For me it’s signals the beginning of “Germ Season”.

Germ season begins with the first day of school and runs through the winter months. Children, especially the younger ones, love to share. They hug, hold hands, share food, school supplies and other possessions. These are all nice behaviors that unfortunately spread germs. The problem in then magnified by the fact that there is a large number of people confined in a small space. As children pick up bacteria and viruses things begin to happen. Noses run, coughing starts, fevers spike, vomiting, bathroom accidents and the list goes on! Germs spread like wild fire! As adults we even get to partake in the germ fest as we are enclosed together during the winter months.

Many of the discomforts of the “Germ Season” must run their course once you have them. However, keep yourself healthy and lessen symptoms by taking care of yourself and avoiding "germy" situations. Some suggestions are:

  • Get plenty of sleep.
  • Eat a healthy balanced diet – lots of fruit and vegetables!
  • Exercise – Everyday 20 – 60 minutes, also helps to reduce stress.
  • Wash hands often – at least 20 seconds, getting between fingers and around nails. Always wash or use hand sanitizer after blowing your nose.
  • Keep backpack/briefcases clean.
  • Use hand sanitizer – when washing is unavailable.
  • Drinking fountains – let the water run before you drink.
  • Don’t share – use your own school/office supplies, brushes, etc.
  • Coughing & Sneezing – into the crook of your elbow, not your hands.
  • Throw away used tissues
  • Use vitamins and supplements to help bolster the body’s defenses.

Have a happy and healthy school year & winter season!
