Herb Weight & Form Converter

Chinese Herb Weight & Form Converter

Convert herbal weights, compare whole and powdered herbs, calculate extraction-ratio mathematics, and scale herbal recipe batches with this free tool from 1st Chinese Herbs.

Choose a calculator below. All calculations are based on physical measurements or user-supplied manufacturing information—not medicinal dose equivalency.

1. Herbal Weight Converter

Convert the physical weight of whole herbs, cut herbs, powders, or extracts.

2. Whole, Cut & Powdered Herb Calculator

Cutting or grinding an herb changes its physical form, but does not automatically change its dry weight. This calculator estimates the material remaining after a user-specified processing loss.

Important: Grinding powder cannot restore a whole herb. This calculator compares physical mass and processing loss, not the feasibility of reversing a manufacturing process.

3. Herbal Extract Ratio Calculator

Explore the raw botanical input and finished extract output implied by a manufacturer-declared drug-extract ratio (DER), such as 5:1 or 10:1.

Extraction ratio is not potency. A 5:1 ratio does not mean that one gram of extract is a medically interchangeable substitute for five grams of dried herb. Products may include carriers, different extraction solvents, varying constituent profiles, and differing ratio definitions. Use only a verified, clearly defined manufacturer ratio for these calculations.

4. Herbal Recipe Batch Calculator

Scale the amount of an ingredient in an existing recipe. Enter the original recipe quantity and the number of servings or batches you want.

Use this for established culinary recipes or a qualified practitioner's existing instructions. Scaling an ingredient mathematically does not establish that a larger serving or herbal dose is appropriate.

5. Herbal Volume-to-Weight Calculator

Powdered herbs have different bulk densities. A tablespoon of one powder may weigh more or less than a tablespoon of another.

To avoid guessing, this calculator requires a measured weight for a known volume of your specific herbal product.

How to measure density: Weigh a known volume of the actual product on a suitable scale. Use a consistent method of filling and leveling the measuring spoon. Do not substitute a generic herb density for an unmeasured product.

Understanding Herbal Weight & Form Conversions

Conversion Can it be calculated? Important limitation
Grams to ounces Yes, precisely Converts physical mass only
Whole herb to cut herb Yes, for expected mass Cutting may cause material loss
Cut herb to raw powder Yes, for expected mass Grinding may cause material loss
Raw powder to whole herb Weight comparison only Grinding cannot be reversed
Raw herb to concentrated extract Only as declared manufacturing-ratio mathematics Does not establish dose equivalence
Tablespoons to grams Yes, with measured bulk density Density varies by herb and product
Recipe for 2 servings to 6 Yes, mathematically Does not validate medicinal dosing

Frequently Asked Questions

Does 100 grams of cut herbs make 100 grams of powder?

Approximately, if the herb is already dry and no material is lost. Grinding changes particle size, not the original amount of dry material. Real-world processing may produce some loss.

Is a 10:1 extract ten times stronger than the raw herb?

Not necessarily. A 10:1 manufacturing ratio may describe raw botanical input relative to extract output, but it does not establish tenfold therapeutic potency or an interchangeable dosage.

How many grams are in one ounce of herbs?

One avoirdupois ounce equals approximately 28.3495 grams, regardless of the herb's physical form.

How many grams are in a tablespoon of herbal powder?

There is no universal answer. It depends on the product's bulk density, particle size, moisture, and packing. Weigh a measured volume of the specific powder for an accurate estimate.

Can I substitute extract powder for whole herbs in a recipe?

Not using a simple weight conversion alone. Extract composition, concentration, added carriers, and preparation directions vary. Follow product-specific instructions or seek qualified guidance.
