Possible Side Effects of Hawthorn and Hawthorn Berries

Possible side effects of hawthorn include headache, dizziness or an upset stomach, although it is widely regarded to be safe over a short period of time for the majority of adults. However, it is important to point out that hawthorn should only be taken under the qualified supervision of your medical practitioner. Hawthorn is primarily used as a cardiac tonic because it has been shown to increase oxygen utilization by the heart. It acts as a mild dilator of the heart and as a peripheral vasodilator.


Chemical Components:   L-epicatechin; quercetin; hyperoside; chlorogenic acid; citric acid and its monomethyl ester, dimethyl ester,  trimethyl ester; sucrose; flavan polymer; and ursolic acid.

Hawthorns are small trees or flowering shrubs, members of the rose family. Native to the regions of Northern Europe, they can be successfully grown all over the world. Herbalist are particularly interested in the small, red, hawthorn berries, although leaves and flowers have also been found to have special properties. Hawthorn is rich in flavonoids, and is noted for its capacity to support the normal activity of the heart.  Hawthorn’s bioflavonoids well  documented antioxidant activity, which is vital for protecting the heart from the ravages of free radicals.


How Hawthorn Berries Are Used Hawthorn berries are often supplied simply dried, but a word of warning, they are extremely hard (a bit like peppercorns) so, if you want to make some hawthorn infusion you are advised to crush them first.   When the berries are sliced first the texture is more of dried fruit.

This has been processed, and usually has dextrin added. This is a powder which is commonly used to make tea or capsules.
Powdered Herb This is the herb, root, berry, twig, or any form of the herb, which has been Powdered into a fine mesh which usually can be put into capsules.  Most of the Powders herbs are in a 1 pound size, unless otherwise noted.
Cut and Sift This the herb, root, berry, twig, or any form of herb cut into manageable pieces. In general about 1/4 thick.  Size of herbs are 1 pound containers
